Expressing Context in Direct Messaging
Direct Messages can include contextual metadata in the header that will give the recipient more information about the purpose of a message. The contextual metadata can be helpful in cases where the receiving system can use machine-readable data to route or process the Direct message or to give more information as to why the Direct message was transmitted if the reason is not obvious based on the rest of the payload. For example, a system that receives a Direct message can route it to the appropriate physician based on the patient ID or other patient attributes found in the context metadata.
For more information on context, please refer to the Implementation Guide for Expressing Context in Direct Messaging. Please refer to the ADD command in the EMR Direct phiMail API documentation for information on how to include context in a message being sent, and how to process it in a received message, using the phiMail API.
